Political system

The independence of Uzbekistan was promulgated in August 31, 1991. The Constitution of December 8, 1992 stipulates that Uzbekistan is a Democratic Republic, multi-party and with a presidential regime. Actually, the president has almost full power and the opposition does not really have the opportunity to express itself. The president leads the government and the administration work. He appoints and dismisses the Cabinet members as well as the State representatives of the regions and he determines the administrative organization. The president of the Republic also leads the Ministerial meetings. The ministers are appointed by the president. The president of the Uzbek Republic can be re-elected once (two consecutive terms). The role of the parliament only consists in validating the laws. The political system in Uzbekistan is characterised by an extremely important centralisation. For instance, the administrative authorities do not have any autonomy.

Food

Traditional dishes

Uzbek food has been highly influenced by Turkish food. There are many culinary specialties and a lot of dishes are spicy.
Plov: mutton cuts served with grated turnips and rice.
Shashlyk: spicy mutton and onions kebab, cooked in charcoal.
Manty: small fresh raviolis stuffed with beef.
Shorpas: large variety of fresh vegetable soups.
Finally in Uzbekistan, and more particularly over the autumn and the summer, it is impossible to avoid eating fruits. Indeed, there is there a large variety of fruits: grapes, apricots, pomegranates and particularly watermelons in the summer.
Drinks: Uzbeks like tea and they drink it at anytime: it is interesting to note that you can find tea breweries or Chai-Khanas. Uzbeks also drink Kefir which is a yoghurt-based cool and substantial drink, often drunk at breakfast.
Amateurs of alcohols will enjoy the Uzbek sparkling wine, also called Shampanski.
