Political system


Federal Republic, presidential regime. The president is elected for a four-year term, renewable only once. The U.S Congress is composed of : the House of Representatives (435 members elected for 2 years) and the Senate (100 senators elected for 6 years, with a third reelected every 2 years). They are in both cases elected by universal suffrage. The two main parties are the Democrats and the Republicans. The Federal republic counts 50 states *, plus the district of Columbia, as well as a series of territorial dependences in the Pacific (Guam, Marine islands), the West Indies (Virgin islands) and the commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
Head of state:President George W. Bush, relected on November, 2nd of 2004. He is the 43rd president of the United States, since de 20th of January 2001.

Traditional dishes


Starters:
Crab Cakes: a traditional appetizer of the South-East. It is an expensive recipe since it requires real carefully crushed up crab in order to make these small butter-fried starters .
Rockefeller Oysters: The Rockefeller Oysters is an American standard. The recipe is often adjusted depending on the chefs tastes or the regions. Though, the main ingredient always remains oysters, covered up with spinach and bread-crumbs. Some add Tabasco to spice up the whole thing.
Vegetables:
Fried fingers of egg plant
Crab Soup: a traditional dish of the South East. It is a crab soup, with dry sheri.
Main dishes :
Chili Con Carne: This worldwide famous dish, is not Mexican, contrary to the popular belief, but from the South of the United States, in the pure Texan tradition.
Chicken Gumbo and andouille - Cajun
Gumbo with shrimps and okra
Jambalaya: it is a classic of the Creole and Louisiana's cuisine. Jambalaya is tomato-based, with meat and chicken stock. However, if you take out the tomatoes, replace the chicken stock with beef stock and add to the Tabasco a pinch of Cayenne pepper, you will have a true cajun dish.
Virginia Ham: the Virginia Ham or Country Ham is traditionally on the table at breakfast.
Cocktails:
Egg Nog: rum-based drink, with brandy in which an egg and a light cream are blended together. In the whole country, the traditional rich beverage is prepared in a big glass mug and is offered in small glass cups as a welcome sign to all the guests at Christmas time. According to traditions, a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg can be sprinkled on top.
Southern Mint Julep (South East): bourbon and mint based cocktail.
Bakery and Confectionery:
Corn bread
Peanut brittle
Desserts:
President's cake : brandy-based cake, with sugared cherries and orange peel. This is a traditional cake dating back to Abraham Lincoln's era.
Pecan of New Orleans: it is a classic Creole dish and takes its origins in New Orleans.
