Slovakia - PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Currency / Business hours / Transportation / Internet / Basic conversation guide / Langages spoken

Currency

The currency is the Slovak crown or the SKK.

Business hours

Offices usually open from 8 AM to 4 PM.

Transportation

Road

The road network is, on the whole, in good condition (few freeways). Respect carefully the highway code (notably speed limits) and the authorized alcohol level in the blood - 0 % - (frequent controls and penalties - disqualification from the driving license and \ or heavy fine). Supply in gas is not a problem (credit cards are accepted). In the event of an accident, call immediately the local police; check the risks related to civil liability. The public transport network is very developed.

Rail

It is dense and in good condition, but distances are long and trains are old.

Air

There are few domestic flights (essentially to Kosice, East). The maintenance of the aircrafts of the three airline companies, "TATRA AIR"(TATRA SIGHT), "SKR" and "SLOVAKIA AIR" (SLOVAKIA SIGHT), do not call to any particular comment.

Internet

The Internet suffix is: .sk

Languages spoken

The official language of Slovakia is Slovak which is spoken by 85% of the population. However, it is important to note that other languages are used in this country such as Hungarian, Ukrainian, Polish and Czech. Hungarians represent the largest minority of Slovakia, with more than 10% of the total population. Most Hungarians speak their mother tongue and live in the south of the country. Finally, Czechs represent the third national minority and go on keeping their own language: Czech.
