Languages


Official language: Portuguese
This language is spoken by 10 million people in Portugal and about 130 million people in Brazil. Portuguese is also the official language in five African nations: Angola, Mozambique, Guinea Bissau, Cape Verde and Sao Tome and Principe.
Caution: the Portuguese pronunciation is difficult. Vowels and consonants have a different sound depending on both their position in the sentence and their accent; moreover, nasal vowels and diphthongs only exist in this language.
Business languages: Spanish, French and English are the most mastered foreign languages and therefore, the most used in business relations.

Political system


Portugal is a parliamentary republic. The President of the Republic is elected by universal suffrage every 5 years. The parliament is composed of the Republic Assembly, 230 members, elected every 4 years by direct universal suffrage.
Head of State : President Jorge Fernando Branco de Sampaio (since March 8, 1996, re-elected on January 14, 2001). The government is formed by the PSD (Social Democrat Party, moderate conservative) and PP (People's Party, conservative). The Prime Minister is Jos?Manuel Dur?o Barroso (PSD - Popular Party, conservative), appointed in 2002.
