Political system

Pakistan is a Republic. Pakistan has just celebrated its fifty years of existence and its independence from the United Kingdom dates from August 14, 1947. As for the right to vote, the suffrage is universal and it is allowed to vote from the age of 21.The head of State is the president. he is elected by the Parliament for a five-year term. The head of the government is the Prime Minister. The Parliament, or majlis-e-Shoora (members elected for a six-year term) is composed of the Senate and the National Assembly the members of which are elected for a five-year term.
In October 1999, The general Musharraf succeeded in a coup and suspended the constitution. He took the title of Head of the Executive and appointed a security national Council, main government organ. After one year, the consequences of the auto-proclaimed power is negative. The reforms announced (stabilisation on the international scene, agreement with India, education, economy, etc.) have not occured. Tensions with India are persisting,a s well as a very high level of corruption and the support to Afghan Talibans, which place the country in the USA's line of sight concerning rogue states.
