Political system
New Zealand is an independent sovereign State since 1947, and a member state of the Commonwealth since 1907. It is a constitutional monarchy and the British Crown is represented by a General Governor appointed for five years (last nomination in 2001). The Executive power is held by a cabinet, composed of twenty Ministers, and presided by the Prime Minister. The Parliament is composed of one Chamber, the House of Representatives, which counts 120 members elected for 3 years. The government and the official administrations are in Wellington, the capital of the country.
