Languages


Official language: Arabic is the official language in Morocco. French is also spoken, along with Arabic, for administration purposes. Berber and English are widespread. Spanish is spoken mainly in the North of the country.

Religion


Religious practises : Islam is the State religion, practised by almost all the population. But there is a liberty of cult. 90% of the Moroccans are Sunni, of the malekite rite. There are also Jewish minorities.


Political system


Morocco is a constitutional monarchy. The Parliament is composed of two chambers, the House of Representatives, 325 members, and the House of Councillors, with two thirds re-elected by direct universal suffrage and the remaining third by an indirect vote from an electoral college composed of the municipal councils, chambers of commerce and trade unions. Parliamentary elections take place every 6 years. Head of State is King Mohamed VI (Since 23 July 1999). Prime Minister is Driss JETTOU (since 9 october 2002).
