Currency
The Japanese currency is the yen. The ISO code is JPY.
Business hours
Banks: from 9.00 to 15.00, Monday to Friday. It is quite difficult to find cash machines that accept non-Japanese credit cards.
Transportation
Road
The condition of the roads is satisfactory. Many ways are narrow and particularly jammed, notably inside and around big city centers. Highways traffic jams do not favor long distance trips by car. Finding gas stations is not a problem. The use of a car outside Tokyo involves a knowledge of the language, since the name of the places is writen in ideograms. In the event of an accident, you must call 119. All vehicles must be insured.
Rail
The railroad network covers 21,151 km, which allows a very fast connection between cities. It is dense, modern and in very good condition. It allows to travel quickly, notably thanks to the high-speed train (Shinkansen), but a ticket is as expensive as an airplane ticket. It is therefore advised to tourists to buy before departure a "Japan Rail Pass", which is valid for unlimited rides on the Japanese rail network (JR) for a period from 7 to 21 days.
Air
The air fleets ("Japan Airlines", "All Nippon Airways", "Japan Air System") offer all the guarantees of reliability.
