India - PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Currency / Business hours / Transportation / Internet / Basic conversation guide / Langages spoken

Currency

The currency is the Indian rupee (INR).

Business hours

Banks: from 10.00 to 14.00, Monday to Friday and from 10.00 to 12.00 on Saturdays.

Transportation

Road

One must be very cautious when driving because of the bad condition of the roads, the traffic-jams, the chaotic character of the traffic, the misunderstanding of the traffic rules by most drivers and also because of the risk of a hostile reaction, especially in the event of an accident physically involving an Indian third party. The third party insurance liability is compulsory and it is necessary to have an international driving license. Emergency hospitalisation represents a major risk due to a lack of well equipped hospitals, except in big cities. It is highly recommended to use the services of a chauffeur when moving.

Rail

The railroad network is very dense and quite reliable, but trains are famous for being extremely slow. It is necessary to watch carefully personal belongings (notably in couchette wagons) because of frequent thefts on the Benares-Delhi, Agra-Delhi, Calcutta-Benares and Calcutta-Puri lines.

Air

Most big regional cities are daily served, either by Indian Airlines, or by private airlines. The conditions of transportation are correct. From India, a 10 USD airport tax must be paid.

Internet

The Internet suffix is: .in
