Political system


Ireland is a parliamentary Republic. The Parliament (Oireachtas), is bicameral and is composed of the House of Representatives (Dail Eireann: 166 members, elected every five years by direct universal suffrage), and the Senate (Seanad Eireann: 66 members).
President: Mary Patricia McAleese (1997/2004) FF
Prime minister: Bartholomew Patrick [Bertie] Ahern (1997) FF
The president is elected for a seven-year term by the people. In 2004
McAleese was the sole candidate, so no elections took place.
