On December 31, 1997, the stocks of wheat were at their lowest level in nine years. The stocks of barley decreased, compared to 1996, but remained higher to the average of the last five years. As for the stocks of canola (main oil seed of Canada), they were higher than in 1996 and to the average of the last five years.
Canada is the 5th producer of wheat in the world.

the areas under cultivation include arable lands and those with permanent crops. They represent 45,700,000 hectares in Canada.
