Political system


Austria is a federal democratic republic*, the parliament is composed of 2 chambers: The House of Deputies counts 183 members, directly elected by the people, by proportional representation and for a 4-year term. It approves the national laws. The Senate, counts 64 members, appointed by the various regional assemblies, directly elected by the people.
President : Heinz Fischer (SP? since the 8th of July of 2004.

Food


Traditional dishes


The Viennese cooking is strongly influenced by Czech, Hungarian, and even Baltic cookery. There is a wide range of specialities with various flavours. The various provinces managed to preserve their culinary patrimony. This way, regional specialities can be found in all hotels and restaurants.
Austrian gastronomy is famous for its cakes (Sacher Torte), its excellent cooked pork meats and its famous white wines (coteaux of Lower Austria, Styria and Burgenland).
